Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Pavesled™?

The Pavesled™ is a unique (Pat. Pending) sport specific resistance device used by hockey players for strengthening all skating muscles and movements. It can be used either off-ice (Model 100) or on-ice (Model 200). It is built with industrial strength steel, industrial strength powder coating and industrial strength brushes. It comes with two sets of adjustable pulling harnesses (one for your waist, the other for your ankles) and an adjustable weight post(s).

How big is the Pavesled™?

The Model 100 measures 16" x 24". The Model 200 measures 24" x 24". Unlike other resistance machines, either Pavesled™ is portable and can be easily taken wherever you go!

TOP

Is the Pavesled™  some kind of new revolutionary device?

Not really.  Resistant sleds have been around for years.  As a strength building tool, they are a proven commodity.  They are used on grass by lots of professional athletes.  Hockey players, though, can’t skate on grass.  Now, for the first time, hockey players can dramatically increase the benefit of using sleds because they can now use a sled while skating!   Hockey players don’t run---they skate!  It’s a fact, the more closely your strength training workouts mimic your on-ice movements the better off you are.

How do you use the Pavesled™?

A skater simply attaches himself/herself to either of the two pulling harnesses. At the other end the harness is connected to the Pavesled™. The skater then begins skating forward, backward, or in circles (crossovers). The Pavesled™ will trail along smoothly behind the skater. Weights (1" diameter center hole) can be added to create greater resistance. Even small amounts of additional weight (2.5 lbs) create a noticeable difference.

TOP

Will the Model 200 go out of control when I stop skating?

No! Absolutely not! When you stop -- it stops!

TOP

Will the Model 200 damage the ice?

No! Absolutely not! The Pavesled™ 200 is at least 20 times less harmful to the ice than ice skaters.

TOP

Is Pavesled™ training a type of free weight exercise?

Yes!  Most strength and training coaches understand that free weight exercises are more beneficial than machine type exercises because free weights allow full range of motion.  Also, most free weight exercises help develop the muscles used for balancing.  There are no-range-of-motion limitations while using the Pavesled™, and obviously you’ll be working your balancing muscles as well.  Pavesled™ training is actually better than general free weight training because it’s so precise…so exact!

TOP

Why is off-ice Pavesled™ training better than resistance machines?

Most weight training resistance machines are very limiting.  They develop muscles in a narrow range of motion and usually in only one plane of motion.  Real life (skating) involves a great number of multi-angle multi-joint movements.  Pavesled™ training does not limit your movements.  Nothing more accurately reflects skating movements than skating movements!  In fact, many new strength training facilities have no (or very few) machines at all!

TOP

Is Pavesled™ training better than using surgical tubing for resistance?

Absolutely!  No doubt about it!  Surgical tubing and bungee cord type devices do not load your muscles through the full range of motion.  With those types of devices, your muscles don’t experience meaningful resistance until the tubing/bungee is significantly stretched.  With Pavesled™ training all your skating muscles are fully loaded at every point along the range of motion.

TOP

Does the Model 100 work as good as the Model 200?

Yes! When you train (off-ice) with the Pavesled™ 100 you are loading (applying resistance to) all your skating muscles in the exact way you use them on the ice.  There is nothing approximate about Pavesled™ training with either model.  In real life (on-ice) you sometimes go from skating forward to skating backward, then backward to forward with some circular skating or crossovers thrown in.  Your Pavesled™ 100 allows you to do all of that off-ice while fully loaded!  Every skating move you make on the ice you can now train yourself to do more forcefully!

TOP

Why two types of pulling harnesses?

Your Pavesled™ comes with a waist belt harness and an ankle strap harness.  With the waist belt harness, you can go from forward skating, to backward skating, to cross-over skating, and then back---without ever stopping---just like what happens in a real live hockey game!  The ankle strap harness is used for forward and backward skating only---but it’s an especially powerful muscle builder.  Why?  Because it requires you to not only push with your legs, but you have to pull with them as well.  This translates in to faster on-ice speed because you’ll be bringing your non-gliding leg back to the ready position a lot quicker.  You will be amazed at how quickly you accelerate on the ice after a few training sessions with the ankle strap harness!

TOP

Is Pavesled™ training a substitute for “power skating”?

No. In most cases, power skating training is about learning proper technique. Although you should learn proper technique no matter what you do, proper skating technique by itself isn’t going to make you a powerful skater.  If you really want to be a very powerful skater you need to practice skating forcefully--- over and over and over. On your own, off-ice or on-ice, you can now train all your skating muscles to exert greater and greater amounts of force.  Proper technique combined with repeated forceful skating with the Pavesled™ is what will really make you a true power skater!

TOP

How does the Pavesled™ make me a faster skater?

One of the components to improved skating speed is force application---power.  Other components are things like leg turnover, proper technique, overspeed training, flexibility, and nutrition.  Pavesled™ training is about training yourself to apply greater and greater amounts of force.  Furthermore, it’s not generic force you’re applying---it’s exact force---skating force---in the exact way you skate!  And not just forward skating force, but backward skating force (hear that defensemen?), and circular skating force!  The more skating force you apply the faster you go!

TOP

Does the Pavesled™ work just the legs?

No!  Because of the way it is used, every muscle involved with the skating motion is strengthened.  In fact, muscles you probably didn’t know you had will now be powerfully strengthened because using other methods, they may have never been loaded before.  Pavesled™  training takes the guesswork out of wondering whether or not you are really strengthening all your skating muscles. You can be sure you are because it is used while skating under fully loaded conditions.  Furthermore, your muscles are strengthened in the exact sequence in which they are used while on the ice.  One of the big advantages of the Pavesled™ is that as your skating muscles get used to applying greater amounts of force you can create progressively greater resistance by adding more weight.  Eventually you will train all your skating muscles to apply extreme amounts of force while skating forward, backward, and in circles.

TOP

Can the Pavesled™ help me improve my technique?

Yes!  In fact, Pavesled™ training with the ankle strap harness improves your technique automatically!  How?  Hook the ankle strap harness to your skates and then try to skate in an upright straight legged position.  You can’t!  If you don’t lower your hips and bend your legs deeply (the most powerful position to be in) you won’t go anywhere!  Skating with the ankle strap harness is a “no brainer”!

TOP

How often should I train with the Pavesled™?

Just like other weight training workouts, you should let all your skating muscles rest at least a day before you stress them again.  Pavesled™ training is exhausting.  Two vigorous Pavesled™  training sessions per week should be all you need to create an extremely forceful skating stride while on the ice. If you are in doubt, we recommend you consult with a Certified Strength and Conditioning professional.

TOP

Besides the Pavesled™, what else do I need for Pavesled™ workouts?

You will need a pair of skates, some weight plates with a 1” diameter center hole (5 to 20 lbs. is plenty), and the appropriate skating surface.  That’s all!

TOP

What’s the bottom line?

The bottom line is this---if you are really serious about becoming a faster skater with lots of serious and specific horsepower and explosive acceleration---train repeatedly with the Pavesled™.  Nothing else is more realistic, accurate, and effective at helping you become not just a power skater---but a very, very powerful skater.  It's a smarter way to train and it really works!
